Valhalla Books – January 2021 news

January 2021
Hello!
I am really excited to share with you some updates we have going on here at Valhalla Books.

If you are new to our email list, thank you for being here. If you have been with me since the early days before I had an email list, thank you so much for hanging with me 🙂

I don’t spam the emails, and I send out updates on books and author interviews.
Let me introduce myself as well while I am at it.

My name is Adam Messer, and I am an author, journalist, and radio show host. My goal is to share compelling stories people enjoy.

I started The Savannah Quill on May 13, 2016 as a way to connect writers and readers to promote literacy. Since then I have hosted conventions, author meet and greets, and the Books and Brews Savannah, which is a fundraising event where authors and I get together to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald Charities of the Coastal Empire.

Our goal at Valhalla Books is to share compelling fiction people love reading. We are a new small print publishing company and our first book The Devil’s Due has received great reviews and write ups. I am working with fantastic authors who believe in our mission.

Thank you for being here and below are some announcements I hope you enjoy.

AdamCongratulations are in order for Author Mark Allan Gunnells for his upcoming supernatural ghost story being #8 in the Top 100 in Hot New Releases on Amazon! Way to go Mark!

With nowhere else to go, Berkley must return to the apartment where it all happened. SAM DUNNE IS BACK

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the arrival of writer Fred Adams Jr.’s second Sam Dunne mystery, “Blood is the New Black.”

Musician Sam Dunne takes on a gig composing a musical score for a cheap, direct to cable slasher film called “Lake Deadly.” Much of the film is shot on location around a nearby lake and Dunne soon learns all is not as it seems among the cast and crew. Petty jealousies and hidden animosities threaten to derail the shooting.

What he doesn’t imagine is the murder of a young woman on camera. Someone purposely switched out the fake dagger with a real one and the girl’s throat is slashed in front of dozen of witnesses. All of it caught on camera.

Once again, Dunne finds himself caught up in a gruesome murder with more than enough suspects to satisfy any weary detective. Only this isn’t make believe and as he attempts to solve the mystery, he is well aware the unknown killer may strike again. All are suspects and possible victims at the same time.

“Writing teachers always tell their students, write what you know,” says Airship 27 Production Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “Though, I personally don’t always agree with that rule, in writer Fred Adams Jr.’s case it bears mentioning.” A retired college teacher who taught fiction writing for many years, Adams also moonlighted as a musician playing with several rock and roll bands. “Fred brings authenticity to Sam Dunne’s world,” Fortier continues. “He’s lived it and it breathes on every single page of this new mystery. We think our readers are going appreciate that, especially those with a fondness for all kinds of music.”

Artist, Richard Jun, provides the nine black and white interior illustrations and the pulpish thriller cover was put together by Art Director Rob Davis.

Return to Gothic Mystery

Pulp AdventureCon 2020 has come and gone … all the planning and concerns, all the winding down afterward … Thanks to everyone who attended, and everyone who spread the word. If you weren’t there, read Walker Martin’s impressions of the show on the MysteryFile blog.
The phrase “Gothic Mystery” evokes images of beautiful women running from austere castles, situated near coastline cliffs … Fog-enshrouded cemeteries with marble mazes of tombstones and mausoleums. Such covers adorned numerous paperbacks from the 1940s through the 1970s, as the Gothic Mystery became a publishing industry unto itself. Bold Venture Press presents three of these classic tales by Norman Firth, a talented gothic mystery practitioner during England’s post-war years.

Murders Macabre
by Norman Firth
Three chilling tales of suspense
“Terror Stalks By Night” — One week after Lucille Rivers was found mutilated, the Rivers family gathers for the reading of the will.
“Phantom of Charnel House” — A grisly apparition prowls the newly built Charnel Estate.
“The Devil In Her” — The frightened locals tell Dr. Alan Carter stories of a murderous woman roaming the moor.

Norman Firth
English writer Norman Firth became a full-time writer in 1944, taking full advantage of a peculiar British climate of “mushroom” publishing caused by wartime austerity. He soon averaged 6,000 words a day, commissioned by many small publishers to turn out lurid crime, western and science fiction stories. In the late 1940s Firth accepted a lucrative commission from Utopian Publications owner Benson Herbert to write 30,000 words a month of “spicy” stories for his various magazines.Firth was only 29 years old when he died of tuberculosis in December 1949, but he had published several million words. He continued writing up until his death, completing a full-length crime noir novel, When Shall I Sleep Again? Many of Firth’s myriad pseudonyms were undiscovered until recently. Philip Harbottle, agent for Firth’s estate (working with his collecting colleague Morgan Wallace) recently discovered several more.
Bold Venture will publish new collections of the best of them, beginning with Murders Macabre.

THE DEAD SHERIFF RIDES AGAIN

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the release of the fourth book in the weird western series created by the late Mark Justice, “Purity” by writer Michael Housel.

Since acquiring the magic amulet, the half-breed Sam used it to re-animate a murdered lawman thus creating the Dead Sheriff. At the same time, to maintain the fabrication of a zombie avenger, he adopted the role of Cheveyo, the Dead Sheriff’s loyal Indian companion. Together they roam the west hunting outlaws and supernatural monsters accompanied by Richard O’Malley, a Boston journalist looking to chronicle their adventures in dime novels.

Whereas the amulet was once the property of a New Orleans mystic known as the Master and he wants it back. To that end the Master recruits a sadistic arsonist named Perdifious who believes himself Satan’s own Hellspawn and has gathered together an army of savage, sadistic killers. They wreak havoc and destruction wherever they go and their next destination is a Quaker settlement named Purity. Learning of this, Sam, the Dead Sheriff and O’Malley plan to confront them there and save a town full of non-violent pioneers.

“It does my heart good to see this book released,” reports Airship 27 Production Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “It continues our promise to Korma Kay Justice that we would do everything in our power to keep her husband’s legacy alive.” Kentucky based writer and radio host, Mark Justice, passed away suddenly several years ago after completing the first Dead Sheriff novel, “Zombie Damnation.” Airship 27 published the book posthumously. Then Fortier completed the second, unfinished manuscript for book two, “Cannibals and Bloodsuckers.” Last year the company published the third installment, “Holster Full of Death” by writer Fred Adams Jr.

“The characters are great and the potential for future books endless,” Fortier declares. Airship 27 Production’s Art Director Rob Davis provided the interior illustrations for “Purity” and the cover was rendered by Michael Youngblood, another Airship 27 creator.
